As we approach a new academic year with 80 students across our five programmes, we are seeking engaged and enthusiastic board members to compliment the skill-set of our existing trustees and expand the range of expertise and advice available to the charity.

We are looking for capable, business-like individuals who are passionate about music and the musical development of young people. We are open to young applicants (18+) who would like to represent young musicians in the South West, but also experienced people who have a background of serving on boards or senior strategic leadership within an organisation. It would be beneficial for applicants to have experience within the arts or charitable sectors.

Applicants must be authentic, passionate, professional and outward-looking. Willingness to listen to the views of others and to research or seek expert advice is essential, along with empathy with creative young people and a passion for music. Ideally applicants will be registered on the DBS renewal service. Please declare any conflicts of interest at application stage.

Estimate of time needed: 2 hours a month plus quarterly board meetings of approximately 2 hours, plus reading preparation. Some weekend representation requested at events. Board meetings are held in Bristol. Events take place across the South West of England.

South West Music School works across a large geographical region. Although we are part of the Department For Education’s Music and Dance Scheme, we are the only Centre of Advanced Training that works in a bespoke, virtual way. If you can help our organisation to grow by securing additional partners, funding, and representation across the region, we want to hear from you.

SWMS has a strong track record of supporting young musicians to develop their skills, expand their musical horizons, and prepare for a variety of careers within the creative industries. Trustees will have the opportunity to contribute to the experiences of the students who participate in our programmes, shape future initiatives, and ensure the continued success of the organisation for the delivery of high quality music education in the South West of England.
