Griselda Sanderson

In her youth, Griselda Sanderson was a member of the Junior department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in Glasgow, and a member of the National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland. She went on to study performance and composition at Dartington College of Arts and has a PhD in Music with a special focus on oral traditions. Griselda plays bowed strings, including the Swedish nyckelharpa and Norwegian Hardanger fiddle. She has performed music on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Griselda taught music performance at Dartington College of Arts in Devon for ten years. She currently lectures at Plymouth University on the music BA and MA programs. Griselda also promotes traditional music, developing networks in the south west, teaching the fiddle and nyckelharpa, running sessions and community groups and playing for ceilidhs and Scottish country dancing in the region. The daughter of a violin-maker in an area of Scotland famed for its traditional music, Griselda has maintained her connection with the culture, as well as developing a keen interest in Irish, Breton, Balkan, Scandinavian and other traditions. She has produced several albums on her own Waulk Records label, and has worked on performance and recording projects with musicians from Portugal, Morocco and West Africa. Griselda is a member of the MU, PRS, PPL and MCPS.
